What Is It & What Does It Mean??

Grounding (also known as Earthing or Centering) is best described as a way to balance physical, mental, and spiritual energies, while connecting to the Earth. At first this may not sound like a reliable health hack but there is some logic behind the entire idea.

The Earths surface is consistently renewing its own supply of free electrons. Before our current habits were adapted, we walked bare foot and these electrons would transfer to the body where we build a positive charge in our cells; canceling them out and leaving us neutral. These electrons have been known to effect us in many positive ways. However, most of todays population wears synthetic shoes and does not get the amount of direct physical contact to the Earth we had gotten before. It can be easy to notice after spending the day outside with contact to the ground. A study has even shown that staying long periods of time in nature (such as the woods) can boost the amount of white blood cells that are very important to the immune system. With this in mind, many have begun to take time to release themselves in this way.

How To?

There are many ways I have seen people grounding in my research but I have chalked it up to 3 categories:

  • Natural Materials
    • Using natural fabric for things such as bed sheets, clothing, and toothbrushes
    • Natural made shoes
    • Natural products such as toothpaste, deodorant, and makeup
  • Plants in the Home
    • Surrounding self and home with plants
    • Talking to plants
    • Meditation surrounded by plants
  • Direct Physical Contact (most effective overall and my personal favorite)
    • Barefoot mountain hiking
    • Laying down in grass
    • Camping
    • Outdoor meditation
    • Barefoot walking

Benefits

  • Better sleep
    • improved rest
    • less difficulty falling asleep
  • Aids overall pain
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Improves circulation
  • Enhances mindfulness
  • Stabilizes blood pressure
  • Increase connection to the Earth
  • Brings self awareness
  • Decreases hot flashes
  • Strengthens immune system
  • Shortens recovery from injuries
  • Lowers stress and tension to aid in breathing

FUN FACT Grounding has been suggested to assist animal health as well!!! 🐾
